The self emerges throughout development and evolves from the dynamic interplay of internal and external influences. We theorize that, in part, struggles with eating and appetites come from the challenges inherent in the interface of these formative systems—the internal and external systems.
Our internal system is made up of our thoughts, feelings, and physiology (the body).
Our external system is made up of our friends and family, our communities, and our culture.
The challenges of this interface (of our inner and outer worlds) are negotiated by the SELF.
That is,
by each of us,
by who we are and what we do and say—
by how we present and express ourselves.
